1. Vocally oppose Deep Sea Mining Deep sea mining is a massive threat to life in the deep sea. While the nodules that contain rare earth minerals are near the surface of the seabed, extracting them is disruptive to the organisms that live in the deep sea in a couple of ways. First, the animals living in the sediment are unlikely to survive the superpowered roomba that sucks up the nodules. Second, the process of pulling the nodules up to the surface results in a sediment plume being released back to the seabed. This plume contains the unwanted bits of junk that the mining roomba sucked up, and also may contain tailings (which are often toxic). So what you end up with is a massive cloud of sediment and toxic junk floating back down to the seafloor, potentially also killing animals in encounters on the way back down. We just don’t know enough about the ecosystem of the deep sea to know the full impact of deep sea mining, but we’re sure it can’t be good. The best thing we can do for the animals of the deep sea is oppose deep sea mining, and sharing this information with our friends, family members, and decision makers in our community.
